Cotton is an important agricultural, social and economic activity that is fundamental for the Colombian textile industry and oil production. The objective of this study was to quantify the genetic progress of cotton yield in Colombia from 1998/99 to 2007/08. The efficiency of the breeding program was measured with data collected on the introduction of lines and cultivars evaluated in different cotton areas from Colombia. The genetic progress for each year was assessed using the Vencovsky et al. (1986) methodology. The genetic progress for cotton yield was 121.86 kg. ha-1 (9,14% yearly) this is owing to genetic effects rather than environmental influences. Those results showed that the cotton breeding program has been efficient to obtain important progresses in fiber yield in field, during the ten years of this study. The lint percentage and capsule weight, showed little effect in increasing the performance of fiber, for accusing poor earnings this year and deserves, the introgression of genes to increase the genetic base and obtain higher profits through these components
